Liam, distinct descriptors: auburn hair, feathery, curtained bangs, fair face, sullen, clean, stormy eyes, thin, petite, dark jumpsuit, lithe, nimble, close-fitted, quiet and fast, flexible, moves like a viper, crouches like a cat.

Dogmeat discovers the fridge, sealed shut with a layer of melted rubber and rust. He's interested. You can hear a soft thumping. Someone inside hears him, and wants to get out.

Liam catches up with Dogmeat, inspecting the fridge suspiciously. He notes something....alive...is in there, but Dogmeat isn't growling, and clearly wants him to open it. When he obliges, he starts and points his pistol at Billy, but stops when he realizes what this is. Billy can't talk and seems for the most part feral, although not hostile. He can tell the difference between friend and foe, and he is attached to Liam, wanting his protection. But other than that he doesn't seem to know up from down. Being stuck in a fridge for two hundred plus years does that to a kid. Dogmeat loves him, and he's the only one who can calm Billy down and even make him smile.

When Liam takes Billy with him, he meets Bullet, who acts friendly and passes himself as a lone trader. The exchange is neutral enough, until Billy's value is brought up. Liam demands the Gunner road toll amount, telling Bullet he knows he has the money and that he knows he's a Gunner. The equipment and gun not so subtly hidden under his baggy coat give it away. When Bullet tries to take the kid, Dogmeat retaliates and Billy's scared into running off. Closing his business with Bullet, Liam follows Dogmeat and finds Billy hiding in his old house. A low-level rad storm starts up. Liam has to coax him to get him on his side again. In the end he finds an old holotape player, and a crate of holotapes. He plays through home recordings of what Billy's parents have been doing and how they've been coping without their son. As he listens, Liam realizes who the kid is, humanizes him, and realizes how far he himself must have gone into the dark to even consider selling him.

Billy connects to the tapes and won't leave them. Realizing the house was vacated, Liam wonders why the parents would leave something so precious behind. He searches around and draws from clues that maybe the house isn't empty after all. Things are still around that are fresh. A HAM radio is still on. A calendar with future days circled is hanging on the wall. He finds a stash of medicine, well stocked and dusted. He starts searching for a cellar hatch. In the end he has to move Billy and the holotape cabinet, with much fuss from the kid, to find the trap door. He pacifies Billy with Nuka-Cherry.

Just as he's about to knock, it bursts open and he's at the nose of a shotgun and a very angry ghoul father. Liam surrenders, insisting that he means no harm. When asked what he wants, he confirms the father is Matt Peabody from the tapes. Then he simply says that he found Billy, looking to the kid. Matt immediately drops his guard, overcome with emotion. He calls Carol up from the cellar and they both embrace their son. But the reunion darkens once they realize what's become of him. Liam tells them not to give up on the kid.

Matt has just apologized and offered heartfelt thanks, when bullets spray the house. Liam and the others drop flat, Matt grabbing his shotgun and Liam drawing his pistol. They listen as Bullet announces his terms. Without a word, Liam backs into the shadow and disappears. He reappears in brush cover a few feet from Bullet, gets behind him, creeps up and holds him at gunpoint. He coldly orders Bullet to call his men off and lose their guns. Bullet scoffs, saying no man could get a Gunner to give up his piece, even to save his skin. Once they realize their leader is compromised, the other men panic and turn their attention from the house. Liam cuts Bullets' knees and uses him as a human shield, yelling for everyone to drop their weapons. Half a dozen men point their guns at him, telling him to drop the boss.

Mid-shouting, a rifle shot takes out one of the men. Carol is posted at the house window and her aim is true. Bullets' men completely lose it, shooting wildly, killing him in the process. Carol kills a second target, Liam pops off two more with his pistol, Dogmeat ambushes another, and the last man high-tails it. As the gunfire stops at last, Liam realizes he was shot in the stomach. He faints as the Peabodys and Dogmeat rush to him. In the last scene, Liam rests in the Peabodys' house, bandaged, Dogmeat lying on the cot with him. Downstairs, he hears Carol and Matt singing a duet for Billy, their nasal sweet voices rising into the smoggy, green-tinged sky.

Liam is camped in a dock house, just a few minutes’ walk from the Four Leaf Fishpacking Plant. He’s woken from sleep by Dogmeat’s sharp barks, warning him of incoming enemies. Liam arms himself and scoops up his camp, about to run, when he hears the howl of a mutant hound and sees the glowing monster rushing for the dock. Liam teleports outside and finds a hiding spot; he needs to sneak-kill the hound at least, so he doesn’t have to worry about being tracked down. He sees the hound and its owner, a super mutant named Crusher, start tearing apart the dock house looking for him.

He duct tapes several grenades together, teleports inside the dock house again and drops the makeshift bomb, before teleporting out. The explosion takes out both Crusher and his hound. Just as he thinks he’s won, Liam is suddenly shot in the leg. Dogmeat panics and tries to guard his wounded friend, but as Liam sees another super mutant and hound team advancing, he records a message for Hancock on his pip-boy, stows it on Dogmeat’s pack and gets his dog to run.

The sniper, Maul, sends his hound, Green, after Dogmeat, but the dog escapes. Maul trains his gun on Liam and makes him keep his hands up until the mutant gets close. Liam manages to pull a knife and stab Maul once before the mutant punches him out. Liam foggily recalls being tied up, hoisted around Maul’s neck like a cape, and carried into South Boston. Maul takes him to a ruined skyscraper, where he has a tower camp a few floors up, accessible only by a thick chain hanging down an elevator shaft. Green stays on the ground in an improvised dog hut, made from the remains of the elevator.

Once up in Maul’s tower, Liam is collared and chained to a girder beam. Maul heals Liam’s leg wound, then grills him about his supernatural power, getting Liam to admit he was born with it and that his mother came from a “special place” underground. Satisfied, Maul admits to liking Liam for being strong and special. He renames Liam “Runt” because of his size, and states that he’ll keep him, make him stronger, and bigger. He tries to feed his new pet but Liam refuses. Maul doesn’t press the matter, but warns Liam that he had better behave, or Maul will eat him. With this sinister note, he retires for the night and leaves Liam to dwell on the situation.

The next morning, Liam finds himself alone in the tower, with a surprisingly legible note from Maul explaining that he’s out hunting. Liam tries to find a weak spot in his chains, but they’re solid and too thick. He uses tower rubble around him to make noise, trying to signal for help, but all it does is attract the attention of a raider patrol. They snoop the base of the building for a few minutes, and call out for whoever was making noise, feigning friendship. Liam waits for them leave. He resolves to keep quiet, but spends the rest of the day watching from his tower, hoping to see friendlies pass by. No one else comes.

When he returns with Green that night, Maul has brought food that’s more digestible for Liam, as well as some junk/toys he thinks Liam might like - a deck of playing cards, a radio, magazines, and a ball-in-a-maze puzzle. Liam’s slightly confused by the gifts, until Maul starts showing sexual attraction and touches him. Liam freaks out and begs him not to. Maul goes to bed in a bad mood. The next morning he goes hunting again.

By this point Liam is so scared that he makes as much noise as he can, not caring who it attracts, so long as it gives him a chance to escape Maul. It doesn’t take long for a group of scavengers to find him. Liam guides them into the building and to the chain. One guy in the group is strong and brave enough to climb up, but all he does is rob the camp, without even leaving Liam a weapon to defend himself.

Maul returns to see his camp robbed and Liam uselessly trying to cut through his chains with a rusty, sharp bit of rubble. Furious, Maul takes Green and leaves to track down the scavengers. He comes back bloody, with meatbags, and all the camp’s stuff. Euphoric from bloodlust, he forces himself on Liam that night.

The next day, Maul hits the road with Liam in tow, determined not to let his pet get found and possibly stolen. He parks Liam in hidden rooms, or in sewer drains, while he goes off to hunt. At night he has sex with him. They temporarily camp with a band of other super mutants, who sell Maul a special prisoner collar that can be remotely detonated. The explosive inside is sensitive to radiation, and threatens to go off when Liam gathers energy to teleport. He begs Maul to remove it, promising he’ll behave, but the super mutant is more than happy with his purchase.

They stay at camp for the day and witness a ritual fight to the death between rivals, and Maul joins a group to hunt down a Deathclaw. Liam meets another captive human who was once a raider boss. The man is now eating human flesh along with the mutants, and wants to become like them. Liam resolves he will never let his captivity drive him to this mindset. Once back from the Deathclaw hunt, Maul has sex with Liam, and afterwards, talks tenderly of how he actually likes Liam’s humanity, and that he misses having it himself.

Sometime after they’ve left the camp, Maul takes Liam hunting with him. They track a scent to a small settlement. Maul gets ready to snipe the father of the settler family, but Liam quietly pleads that he spare them, and instead just kill their brahmin livestock. Maul looks at him for a second, then shoots the brahmin dead. He sends Green over to the farm and the scared family hide in their cellar. Maul brings Liam over and raids the house, then asks Liam if he’s satisfied. He asks him how he’ll repay Maul’s gesture. Liam offers him hollow affection, and after sex, they leave with their spoils.

An undetermined time later, Liam has grown strong enough to keep up with Maul’s pace and no longer has to be carried. They travel together, hunt together, eat their meals together. Liam is trusted with his own weapon now. While camping near the road, Maul spies traders. Liam promptly hides his collar with a scarf and goes to trade with them. Maul reminds him what will happen if he causes trouble. It’s clear they’ve reached a compromise - Liam commits to his captivity in order to get Maul to spare innocents.

Next, they’re working in sync to clear a raider camp. Maul shows considerable more pride and affection towards his pet. There’s a tense moment where Liam, in shock from battle, points his weapon at the mutant, but Maul berates him. It’s clear that he now has psychological power over Liam. They stay in the camp overnight, a mistake, as an ally raider gang ambushes them in retribution. Maul saves Liam’s life and slaughters the attackers. He then embraces Liam, showing a moment of weakness and true care for his captive. Liam doesn’t return it at all. In fact his emotions are almost gone and he acts eerily automatic.

They flee the scene and get caught in a rad storm. The high radiation levels threaten to set off Liam’s collar, so Maul takes it off. He has nothing to tie Liam up with, so he just holds him. They share a quiet moment in a barn for shelter, Maul holding Liam protectively, more attached to him now than ever. He falls asleep. Liam steals the mutant’s carving knife and carefully extricates himself. He looks at his captors as if to kill them, but can’t seem to muster the strength. Instead he runs out into the storm.

Green’s barking wakes Maul up and he gives chase. Liam gets lost in the storm and collapses in a trench, out of the wind. Enraged, Maul finds him, and grabs his lost pet, as if to choke him, but hugs him instead. Liam calms him down with soft, soothing gestures, before abruptly slicing Maul’s neck clean with the knife. He then kills a confused and whining Green. Both his traveling companions of countless weeks dead, Liam breaks down and cries.

The storm passes. Liam burns both corpses, and makes a well-barricaded home out of the barn. He tends to his injuries with stimpaks. He has feverish nights, waking to dog barks and hounds howling, only to realize they’re just in his dreams. He still plays with the ball maze puzzle Maul gave him to stop his hands from shaking. He refuses to leave the barn. Two days after he’s killed Maul, he’s lying on the bed and gazing at his pistol. Tentatively, he points the barrel under his chin and closes his eyes. Suddenly he hears a dog bark. He thinks he’s hallucinating. He hears whining and scratching on the door. Liam sits up, gun falling from his shaking hands. Someone pounds on the door. Hancock calls his name.
